FROM THE RECTOR’S STUDY
One of the most important ministries in the Church is that of Server.  Servers actively assist the priest (or bishop) in the
worship of God.  The patron saint of those who serve at the altar is St. Vincent.  He was a deacon in Spain who was
martyred for refusing to renounce Christ.  His jailer was so impressed with the holy deacon’s faith despite the cruel
tortures inflicted upon him, that he was converted to the Faith.  St. Vincent was known for his love of God, his
faithfulness to his bishop, and his unswerving loyalties to his responsibilities.  The motto for servers is from the Rule of
St. Benedict.  It is: “That in all things God may be glorified.”

During the performance of their duties, servers at St. Paul's wear a black cassock and white surplice.  Servers say
special prayers when donning each of these vestments.  Each server wears a cross.  Servers in training wear a small
cross with a leather cord.  When such a candidate has been sufficiently trained, including on-the-job training, and
when he has demonstrated the required love of God, piety, loyalty, and responsibility, he is installed as a Server.  He
continues to wear
the small cross.  After further experience and demonstration of mature competence, a server may be elevated to the
rank of Honor Server.  Honor Servers wear a larger cross with a red cord.  Servers with the greatest experience in all
of the positions of duty, and with the highest level of performance and faithfulness, may be elevated to the rank of
Senior Server.  Senior Servers wear the largest cross with a gold cord.

There is one office and several positions in the server corps.  The office is Master of Ceremonies.  The Master of
Ceremonies is responsible to direct the servers to ensure that the ritual is properly performed during the Mass or other
service.  He is also responsible for server position assignments and for training of server candidates.  Bill Johnson is
the Master of Ceremonies at St. Paul's.

The server positions are sets of duties assigned for a particular Mass or other service.
The Thurifer handles the thurible and boat.  The thurible is the incense pot and the boat carries the incense grains.
Incense is used to lead processions (entering and leaving the Nave) and to bless and show honor to sacred things,
ministers, and the congregation at certain times during the Mass.
A Boat Bearer may be used on certain high occasions.  He will carry the boat and accompany the Thurifer.
The Crucifer carries the processional cross during the processional and the recessional.  He holds the cross in place
at the reading of the Gospel.
The Torchbearers (or Acolytes) carry the torches.  They accompany the Crucifer, one on each side of the
processional cross.  In some parishes, Servers are called Acolytes.  But the word “Acolyte” better applies to the
specific responsibilities of the Torchbearers.
First Server and Second Server are positions with specific duties during the Mass.  There is no priority or hierarchy
indicated by the designations “First” and “Second.”  These titles are used to distinguish two different sets of
responsibilities.  Between them, the First and Second Servers bring items from the Credence Table (next to the Votive
Stand) to the priest at the altar, rearrange things on the altar as needed, ring the Sanctus bells, and perform other
duties as necessary.

In a procession, the Thurifer (and Boat Bearer) will lead, followed by the Crucifer who is flanked by the Torchbearers.
It is a common practice to honor the processional cross as it passes by, with a bow of the head.  The First and Second
Servers will follow, preceded by the choir and followed by ordained ministers.

CLASP – ST. PAUL’S MEN’S CLUB

The second meeting of St. Paul’s men’s club, “Christian Lads at St. Paul’s” (CLASP) was held July 25th at Pepper‘s in
Pasadena.  Indicating that this is still a popular church organization, eighteen men attended.  We can be sure that they
are all looking forward to the next meeting.

Annual Parish Meeting

St. Paul’s Annual Parish will be held on January 22nd, 2012, the Third Sunday after Epiphany.  As always, this meeting
is held on the Sunday closest to the feast day of the conversion of our title saint, St. Paul.  The meeting will be held
after Mass, and after a pot luck midday meal.  This important meeting sets the course of St. Paul’s secular activities for
the next year.  Activities include financial and ministry reports, approval of budgets, election of vestrymen, recognition
awards, and resolutions.

PARISH PICNIC
Unfortunately, the 2011 Parish Picnic had to be cancelled.  Although, the weather would have been ideal, drought
conditions caused a burn ban in all of the area parks.  This included the use not only of park provided barbeques, but
any use of flame at all.  May God bless us with sufficient rain in 2012 to be able to reinstitute our annual parish picnic.

ST. PAUL’S TENTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Yes, St. Paul’s will soon be ten years old!  In 2002, on February 10th, Quinquagesima Sunday, St. Paul’s had its first
Mass.  There were eighteen in attendance.  In the months that followed, Sunday attendance was in single digits.  But
after sixteen attended Easter Sunday Mass, St. Paul’s broke solidly into double digits, and never looked back.  We
have grown from tiny to small.  Thanks be to God!

THANKS TO DONA PAGE

Many thanks to Dona Page for her creative decoration of Jackson Hall.  As we pass through the seasons of the year,
Dona has graced our fellowship area with appropriate color coordinated table coverings and imaginative centerpieces.
We have all enjoyed the Fall themed decorations, and will now look forward to Advent and Christmas colors and
creations.

ST. PAUL’S BUILDING TEAM

Bill Harrison leads the team that is handling the details of the move of St. Paul’s to a new church facility.  Having
reached the 70% barrier to growth (70% of a resource exceeded, for example parking lot space), the Vestry decided to
secure a larger church building.  The Building Team consists of Lynn Austin (facility design), Derek Beck (real estate),
Deacon Joseph (engineering consulting), Neal Jackson (finance and contracts), and the team leader, Bill Harrison
(project management).  After an extensive search for existing churches to buy and suitable plots of land for building,
the team recommended a tract of over two acres in the Clearpoint Crossing development on Space Center Boulevard
(near Cullen’s restaurant).  The Vestry approved entering into a no risk contract to buy the land subject to our findings
during a 60-day fact finding (due diligence) period.  The date of the contract is October 24th.  If St. Paul’s buys the
property, the Building Team will begin development and construction of a new building early in 2012.

Thanks to our Volunteers
St. Paul’s wishes to thank Curt Hurst, who has bravely accepted appointment as St. Paul‘s Treasurer.  This is a
significant role in the secular affairs of our church, to which Curt brings an extremely impressive and extensive
background.  He has held the position of comptroller for a number of organizations and has specific experience
handling the finances of a church.  Also, Dottie Speedie has volunteered to be one of Curt’s “worriers”.  She is helping
Curt to prepare the weekly deposit, and is offering a second set of eyes on our financial transactions.  We also thank
Bill Harrison and Merle Grant for their willingness to serve as appointed interim vestrymen until the elections at the
Annual Parish Meeting.

ADVENT BIBLE STUDY

Our Advent Bible Study began November 26th.  They are held Saturdays, at 10:00AM, at the Rectory.  The subject is
“Angels and Devils”.  This is an opportunity to learn about a fascinating, but typically misunderstood, subject.
Upcoming during Lent, we will complete our Bible Study series on the radio plays, “The Man Born to Be King” by
Dorothy L. Sayers.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

During the last few months, St. Paul’s is pleased to welcome new members, Lynn Austin, Rosemary Brown. Colleen
Holbert, and Curt & Susan Hurst.  We are pleased to welcome back Danny & Sandra Johnson.  And we welcome
Dennis Thompson, a visitor who will be attending until January.

ANNUAL OFFICER SANTA SUPPORT

As in past years, the generous parishioners of St. Paul’s were asked to support the Officer Santa Program
administered by the Pasadena Police Department’s Community Services Division.  In this Christmas program, toys are
provided for needy children in the Pasadena area.  Referrals come from police officers who come in contact with these
children while working calls on the street.  The gifts are tagged “From Santa” and are delivered the week of Christmas
by uniformed police officers.  Thanks again for your generous support of this worthy local program.

CONFIRMATION CLASSES

Confirmation classes will begin January 14th, 2012, at 10:30AM.  Christian education is an essential element of a
strong faith.  Those who learn their catechism and other fundamentals of the Faith will be lifelong Christians and
witnesses to the Gospel.  The classes will be divided into adult and junior sections.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW ORGANIST

Many thanks to our new organist, Colleen Holbert.  Colleen is not a stranger to many of St. Paul’s parishioners.  Nor
are her talents as organist and vocalist.  Having been in the Anglo-Catholic tradition for over 40 years, she is familiar
with all of our Mass music.  We are indeed grateful for her willingness to serve the Lord at St. Paul’s.
